China is the most populated country in the world. By the end of 2004, the total population of China was 1299, 88 million (without including the population in Hang Kong Special Administrative Region, Macao Special Administrative Region, and Taiwan), accounting one fifth of that of the world.

China is also one of the countries which have a high density of population in the world. The average population density of the nation is 135 people for every one square kilometer. Moreover, the population of China spreads unbalanced all over the country. For instance, the coastal area in the east is densely populated and every one square kilometer lives 135 people on average; the mid area of China has a population density of over 200 people for one square kilometer; on plateaus in the west area, population becomes quite sparse and drops to less then ten people for every one square kilometer on average.

1. The trend of over-rapid population growth has been effectively checked.

Compared with the result of the fourth national population census at 12 p.m. on July, 1, 1990, 1.13368 billion, Chinese population has increased by 132.15 million within ten yars and four months. The growth rate is 11.66%. The population grows by 12.79 each year, and the average annual growth rate is 1.07%. The annual increase rate is 4 per-thousand-points lower than that of the end of 1980s. This result shows that China's planned parenthood policy has made obvious achievement. China not only gets through the third birth rate smoothly and effectively controls the trend of over-rapid population growth, but also begins to enter a stage of development of low fertility level.

2. There is an obvious improvement of population quality.

Of the population of 31 provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the central government, and active army of Chinese mainland, 45.71 million have had a college education ( above junior college education ); 141.09 million have had a high school education ( Vocational secondary school education is included.); 429.89 million have had a middle school education; and 451.91 million have had an elementary school education. Compared with the result of the fourth national population census, the number of the people who have had education of different level in every 100000 changes in the following way. The number of the people who have had college education increases from 1422 to 3611; the number of the people who have had high school education increases from 8039 to 11146; the number of the people who have had middle school education increases from 23344 to 33961; the number of the people who have had elementary school education is reduced from 37057 to35701; and the number of the illiterate people ( people of 15 and over who is unable to read or can read a little ) is 85.07 million. Compared with the result of the fourth national population census in 1990, illiteracy rate is reduced from 15.88% to 6.72%,and is 9.16 percent lower.

3. The progreess of the aging of population has been quickened.

This population census shows that fairly great changes have taken place in the age structure of China's population. People from 0 to 14 numbers 289.79 million and makes up 22.89% of the total population, and is reduced by 4.8 percent, compared with the population census in 1990. People from 15 to 64 numbers 887.93 million, and makes up 70.15% of the total population. People of 65 and over numbers 88.11 million and makes up 6.96% of the total population, and increases by 1.39 percent, compared with the population census in 1990. These show that, since the reform and opening up, with the rapid development of economy and society, the great improvement of people's standard of living and medical cause, especially the rapid decrease of population growth causes the quickened progress of the aging of population.

4. 106.74 The ratio of men to women is 106.74.

Of the population of 31 provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the central government, and active army of Chinese mainland, men numbers 653.55 million and makes up 51.63% of the total population; women numbers 612.28 million and makes up 48.37% of the total population. The sex ratio ( taking women as 100, the ratio of men to women ) is 106.74.
